Do you want your health to last as long as your life? For Americans the average life span is 75 years old, but the average total number of healthy years of life is only 67. We hear that regular exercise is important for health and well being, but we are not doing it enough. Few people realize how powerful walking is as a way to stay active.

Scientific evidence has documented that regular walking can prevent or even reverse many diseases. Walking can lower blood pressure, increase bone density, and even expand the volume of brain tissue. Walking can help promote weight loss, prevent diabetes or reduce its severity, lower cholesterol, moderate anxiety and depression, decrease colon and breast cancer risk, and relieve knee arthritis pain. Walking in a natural setting connects one to Nature, thereby reducing stress and heightening self-reflection.

Now coming to the United States is the subtle-yet-powerful Jangsaeng Walking Method. (Jangsaeng is the Korean word for Longevity.) While this walking method is a new form, it has deep roots in Eastern traditional health practices and is informed by Western medical findings.

Jangsaeng Walking Method is a highly beneficial way of walking, whether around the house or around the neighborhood. It is a human technology that involves a greater awareness of body angle, pelvic tilt, breath, and other body mechanics. In particular, one should walk with a firm sense of the weight distributing to the balls and toes of the foot. According to Oriental Medicine, this area contains the yong-chon acupressure point, which is the start of the meridian (energy channel) for the kidney. Kidney health relates to the speed and intensity of the aging process. Jangsaeng Walking Method helps to strengthen calf muscles, which puts gentle pressure on the yong-chon point. In Oriental health theory, flowing kidney energy contributes to keeping us young and healthy. Furthermore, Jangsaeng Walking Method activates the power of your mind's awareness, which has an enormous influence on the body and brain.

Here are nine guidelines for this amazing Jangsaeng Walking Methods:

  1. Yong-ChonTilt the lower part of your pelvis forward.
  2. Breathe with your lower abdomen.
  3. Let your heel tap the ground gently as you step forward, with a straight leg.
  4. Feel your weight transfer fully to the balls (yong-chon) and toes of your foot.
  5. Keep your feet parallel, walking on either side of an imaginary line.
  6. Angle your body 1 degree forward.
  7. Relax your shoulders,
  8. Swing your arms freely.
  9. Smile!
